
Cadet/Junior World Championships BC Results!

From April 2nd-10th, nine BC athletes and three coaches travelled to Dubai for the Cadet/Junior World Championships.
The competition started off with the sabre events, where Tamar Gordon (junior), Florella Peng (cadet), Jack Pan (junior), Jerry Pan (junior) and Koan Nyantee-Zeiger (cadet) competed.
In junior women's sabre, Tamar placed 40th after losing a close 15-14 bout Seri Ozaki of Japan. She also fenced in the team event, where Canada came 23rd after a close 45-44 first bout against Korea. Jack Pan placed 33rd in junior men's sabre, while Jerry Pan came 47th. Both competed in the team event, placing 25th.
Florella Peng competed in the cadet women's sabre event, coming 67th. Koan Nyantee-Zeiger fenced in cadet men's sabre, where he placed 69th.
On day four, we moved onto the foil events where Adam Wong fenced in the cadet, junior and team categories. In junior, Adam came 115th after a hard-fought bout against his Canadian teammate, Patrick Liu. The next day, Adam came back to place 26th in the cadet event, with a bye into the round of 64, followed by a 15-10 victory against Hing Wing Francis Wong (HKG). He lost in the round of 32 against Matteo Iacomoni, 15-9 (ITA). In the team event, Canada placed 9th with a 45-32 win against Hong Kong, but lost to Poland 45-42 - just narrowly missing top 8.
Day 7 marked the start of the epee events, with Nicholas Zhang (cadet and junior), Derek Rong (junior) and Eric Pan (cadet) fencing over the final three days of the competition.
Nicholas Zhang and Derek Rong were first up in the junior men's epee event. Nicholas placed 119th, winning his first DE 15-9 against Abdulmalek
El Ghadi (LBA), but lost 15-10 to Julien Maury (FRA) in the round of 128. Derek came 108th, winning 15-5 against Charles Bioletti (NZL), but also lost in the round of 128 to Lino Heurlin Vazquez (FRA), 15-9. Both Nicholas and Derek competed in the team event, where Canada placed 26th after losing 45-22 to Iraq in the first round. Last, but certainly not least, Nicholas and Eric Pan fenced in the cadet men's epee event. Eric came 24th with a 15-7 win over Kael Kolodochka (AUS), a 15-12 win against Preston Stroop (NED) in the round of 64, but lost 15-8 to Alec Brooke (GBR) in the 32. A big congratulations to Nicholas Zhang who placed 6th in the cadet men's epee event. He started with a bye into 64's, then won a 15-4 bout against Nikita Doronin (EST). A close match followed against Nolan Wingerter (FRA), where Nicholas had a 15-14 victory to make it into top 16. His next match was against Dohyun Kim (KOR), with another win of 15-12. In top 8, Nicholas lost a close match against Fabio Mastromarino (ITA), 15-12.
A huge congratulations to all of our BC and National Team athletes who competed at World Championships, as well as the coaches and staff, Victor Gantsevich (men's epee coach), Simon Stavissky (men's foil coach) and Igor Gantsevich (head of delegation), who worked hard alongside these fencers!
